The Norwegian Seafood Council is thrilled to announce that Chef Takatoshi Toshi, of Michelin-starred Sushi Ran in Sausalito, CA, took third place at the first-ever Global Sushi Challenge Grand Final. Hosted by the Norwegian Seafood Council and the World Sushi Skills Institute, this one-of-a-kind event was held in Tokyo, Japan on Nov. 25, 2015 joining sushi chefs from around the world to showcase their talent.
Judges from the World Sushi Skills Institute and three local sushi experts evaluated the competition in two rounds. In the first round, each chef had 10 minutes to demonstrate his knowledge and skill in making Edomae sushi. During the second round, chefs had 60 minutes to present an original creative sushi plate.
Jun Jibiki of Japan placed first, Damien Tan King Meng of Singapore took second place. Chef Takatoshi was selected to compete at the Global Sushi Grand Final when he won the US Preliminary competition on May 17, 2015 in Chicago, Ill.
Long considered an art form in Japanese culture, chefs spend years perfecting their sushi technique as the presentation can be just as important as the taste. Nowhere is this more evident than at the Global Sushi Challenge.
